Dark Mirrors brings together sixteen essays written between 2015 and 2021 by photographer and critic Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa, focusing on contemporary photographic and video practices, primarily in the United States. The texts examine the relationship between images and the urgent, complex questions shaping our time, through close engagement with artists whose work reflects on history, visual culture and social life.
The book argues that one of the most dynamic sites of innovation in recent photographic practice has been the photobook itself, and many of the essays consider works specifically in that form. Recurring themes include the interrelationship between anti-Blackness and visuality, the fragility and complexity of embodied difference in portraiture, the social power of verbal and visual media, and the politics of attention.
