“At the beginning of the project, I wrote:
‘I come from a family of seven. The living room in my parents’ home is in constant disarray, with laundry hanging indoors due to the lack of space on the balcony. The dining table is cluttered with leftover food and condiments, while the kitchen sink overflows with dirty dishes. Clothes lie scattered across the house — unwashed, unfolded, and abandoned on the floor. My mother sleeps amid this chaos, exhausted, her face still made up.
Meanwhile, my younger brother loses his temper as my mischievous fourth-grade sister runs through the piles of clothes, sparking arguments. My father, seemingly unfazed, quietly takes care of the household chores — washing dishes and cleaning on his own. My mother rarely does housework and cannot cook; when she does, food is often left uneaten. Yet she prepares more than the family needs, leaving her to finish it herself.’”
Begun in 2005 and developed over the course of thirteen years, this body of work documents the artist’s family home in the suburbs of Yokohama. Through an unflinching yet intimate lens, the photographs capture the complexities, tensions, and quiet rhythms of domestic life, observed from a position that is at once deeply personal and deliberately detached.
