The publication “Untitled/Photographs” is an edit of Daisuke Yokota’s new series “untitled” as presented during the exhibition “Photographs” at Rin Art Association Gallery in April 2021.
In “Untitled,” Yokota combines photographic emulsion, fixative and bleach to create his visual pieces on the boundary of painting and photography.
Yokota pursues a deconstructive approach to photography, creating images that are not manipulated by light but by the artist himself. His images are the results of actions, phenomena, and representation. Yokota’s work is often concerned with the artist’s memory and personal past, with the medium of photography re-appropriated as a memory device; at times, the role of photography in Yokota’s art becomes a focus of the artist’s attention, too.
“Untitled/Photographs” is a trace of Yokota’s reflections on his relationship with photography, with the audience asked to be active participants.
Daisuke Yokota is one of the most highly acclaimed contemporary art photographers in Japan. He has won several national and international awards, including the prestigious Paul Hough Award and the Kimura Ihei Award.
