Daisuke Yokota – 4x5

No camera is used to make these pictures. Daisuke Yokota works directly on sheets of 4x5 inch colour negative film, subjecting the emulsion to water, heat and simple chemistry until it swells, cracks, blisters and drifts across its base. What emerges looks like painting: stained fields of acid colour, crusted surfaces, poured and dripping forms. Yet because the material is photographic, the eye cannot stop searching for a subject. Skies, shorelines, figures, faces and bodies appear, though none of them were ever there.

Published on the occasion of Paris Photo 2026. The publication will have its launch on the 11th of November at Grand Palais, together with an exhibition of original 4x5 inch film pieces framed between glass.
