Joseph Szabo is an American photographer who taught art and photography at a high school on Long Island, New York, in the 1970s and 1980s. His black-and-white photographs of his students became some of the best-known images of American teenage life.

American Teen brings together his well-known pictures and many unseen ones in a new, complete edition. The students pose for the camera, smoke, hang out at the beach and go to a Rolling Stones concert. The book includes new texts by Sofia Coppola, who commissioned the project, and Kim Gordon.
