His latest series was also created in a major city: Tokyo. However, this time the city’s architecture is not the subject. Michael Wolf’s Tokyo Compression focuses on the overwhelming reality of Tokyo’s underground transportation system. For his photographs, he chose a location that constantly provides his camera with new images, minute after minute.

Every day, thousands of people enter this subterranean world for two or more hours, confined between glass, steel, and fellow commuters as they travel to work and back home beneath the city.

In Michael Wolf’s photographs, we encounter countless human faces, each attempting to endure and adapt to this extraordinary daily experience in their own way.
