John Hillcoat is an Australian film director, known for films such as The Proposition, Lawless and The Road, based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy.

While preparing The Road in the mid-2000s, Hillcoat travelled across America with a Polaroid camera, looking for landscapes that matched the book. He photographed real places marked by disaster, including strip mines in Pennsylvania, New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and Mount St. Helens. Edited and sequenced by photographer Todd Hido, the Polaroids are presented like a scrapbook. The book's design is based on a first edition of The Road, taken apart and turned inside out.
